Rule #1: Never Give the First Number
When a recruiter asks for your salary expectations early in the process, deflect politely. Try saying, "I'm currently focused on finding a role that is the right mutual fit. I'm open to competitive offers based on the responsibilities."
Do Your Research
Come to the negotiation table armed with data. Use platforms like Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, and Blind to understand the exact compensation bands for the specific role and location. Knowing the market rate makes you impossible to lowball.
Negotiating the Total Package
Base salary is only one component of your compensation. If the company cannot budge on the base pay due to internal bands, negotiate other levers: signing bonuses, stock options (ESOPs/RSUs), performance bonuses, extra vacation days, or remote work stipends.
